KI’S UNIVERSAL SEATING COLLECTION, ARISSA, CREATES WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT AT GOLISANO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Healthcare Design October 31-November 3, 2009 Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center Orlando, Florida Booth #1218
ORLANDO. – The new Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY creates a healing environment for patients and loved ones with amenities including a tree house, solarium, private patient rooms, family areas, café, and performance space. Also contributing to the welcoming atmosphere of the facility is KI’s Arissa furniture collection, the first “universal” seating collection that comfortably accommodates virtually any body type, including the obese. A video detailing Arissa and its use at the new facility is available at http://www.youtube.com/kinetwork#p/a/u/0/bPMkp2IAHGk. “Arissa fits nicely into our patient- and family-centered approach to care,” said Burt Thomas, director of facility design at Upstate Medical University. “It comfortably supports people of all ages, weights and heights, making it ideal for serving the variety of family members and loved ones that visit a children’s hospital. From a design standpoint, Arissa represents an interesting piece of sculpture while on a practical basis it eliminates the question about how much bariatric furniture to specify.” The collection can be found in lounge and lobby areas of the two-story, 71-bed children’s hospital that crowns the top of University Hospital’s new $150 million East Tower addition. The facility features enhanced patient and family amenities, including spacious private patient rooms designed to give parents and family members a comfortable night’s sleep without leaving their child’s side. The private rooms are more than 250 square feet larger than the hospital’s existing pediatric rooms, which are double rooms. The entire two-story children’s hospital increases the amount of space dedicated to pediatric care fivefold, from 18,000 square feet to more than 87,000. “The Arissa Collection leads the way for a new type of design — one that accommodates all types without segregating larger individuals,” said Debbie Breunig, R.N., BSN, MBA, vice president of healthcare, KI. “By embracing the concept of universal design, the Arissa Collection fills two clear gaps we identified in the healthcare market: seating that allows healthcare providers to respectfully meet the unique needs of the size-challenged population and the difficulty interior designers face when trying to achieve creative design with current bariatric offerings.” The children’s hospital is named for Rochester-area businessman B. Thomas Golisano, who donated $6 million to build the facility. The Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital has been made possible by an unprecedented outpouring of philanthropic support from organizations, business and schools near and far which raised more than $21 million to build the facility.
